Located along the Flint River, Flint is the fifth largest city in Michigan. Some scholars consider the Saginaw Valley, particularly the Flint area, to be the oldest continually inhabited part of Michigan. Flint was originally home to several Ojibwa tribes at the top of the 19th century. Jacob Smith, a fur trader on cordial terms with both the local Ojibwas and the territorial government founded a trading post in Flint itself in 1819. In the latter half of the 1800’s, Flint became a lumber center, at the turn of the 20th century the revenue and infrastructure from lumbering funded the establishment of the local carriage making industry. Flint is probably best known for being the birthplace of General Motors Corporation and the Flint Sit-Down Strike of 1936-1937 that played a vital role in the formations of the United Auto Workers.
