After a series of wars with the local Native Americans, Chicago was founded in 1833, near a portage between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River watershed. During the mid 18th century the area was inhabited by a Native American tribe known as the Potawatomi. The first non-indigenous permanent settler in Chicago, Jean Baptiste Pointe du Sable, was a man of mixed African and European heritage. He arrived in the 1770’s and founded the areas first trading post. The name “Chicago” is a French rendering of the Native American word shikaakwa, meaning “wild onion.” Historians believe that Native Americans used the word “Checagou” to describe, not the pungent smell of wild onion, but anything great or powerful.
