At Abundant Life Academy, we do not just serve the struggling teen. It is our firm belief that, once a teen has reached the point of enrollment at ALA, the parent has experienced a great hardship as well. So, we believe it is vital to work with the parents as well, providing them new tools to use when their son or daughter is reintegrated into the home.
As a result, we require that all parents of enrolled students participate in our Parent Coaching program. We provide a Parent Coach who works with the parents over the phone, helping them not only to assimilate into the program, but providing them with additional tools to help them through their teen’s stay at Abundant Life Academy.
Parent Coaching starts upon enrollment. The Parent Coach and the parents have five phone sessions together, usually one week apart. It is imperative to complete the whole Parent Coaching program in the first two months of placement. If the parents are divorced, the Parent Coach treats each family unit separately.
The first call is used to fill the parents in on some specific policies and practices at ALA and go over the Student Manual. For the second session, the Parent Coach reviews the results of the DISC Personality Test. These results help the parents to know themselves, each other, and their son or daughter better. The last three sessions are designed to review three books that the parents have read previous to each session:
- Why Christian Kids Rebel by Tim Kimmel
- Leadership and Self-Deception by The Arbinger Institute
- Parenting Teens with Love and Logic by Foster Cline and Jim Fay
The Parent Coach is present to serve as a liaison between the parent and the ALA staff. All questions are encouraged, and as much support as possible will be given throughout the process.
Parent Coaching serves a vital role in the total process at ALA, with the ultimate goal of having students graduate with academic success, better behavioral choices, improved relationships with their parents, and a stronger commitment to their faith.
