Private Boarding Schools for Troubled Teens vs. Christian Boarding Schools for Troubled Girls and Troubled Boys

ALA StudentsThere are literally hundreds of "private boarding schools" for troubled teens located throughout the world. Most boarding schools for troubled teens are located within the United States. There are many similarities between the private boarding schools and Christ-centered schools. Most use a strong environment structure with disciplinary mechanisms to manage students who enroll in a state of rebellion (utilizing the theory of behavioral modification to affect emotional growth within the students). Additionally, many of these boarding schools are therapeutic in nature. Meaning, their main focus is on the dangerous out-of-control behaviors, including mental health, antisocial, and criminal behavior. Most private boarding schools for troubled teens are locked-down facilities with strong emphasis on student safety. Very few schools for troubled teens focus on academics needs of their students.

Christ-centered boarding schools, by in large, are quite different. The therapeutic modality of “behavioral modification”, presented through a system of punishment and reward, is not utilized. Faith=based schools focus on “internal change” delivered in a safe, secure, and loving environment. As with any school serving troubled boys or girls, Christ-centered boarding schools do use a system of consequences and rewards. Consequences are not punishments, and are not used to change the behavior of the student per se. Within Christ-centered boarding schools consequences are more natural, and fit the consequences the teen would find in the “real world”. Faith-based programs for troubled boys and girls are trying to find ways to affect the heart, as opposed to directly modifying the behavior. The emotional growth potential is far greater within the Christian programs for struggling youth.
